SUMMARY OF LAST WEEK:

Racing was at MOONEE VALLEY on Saturday on GOOD track with rail TRUE, there was a school of thought leader’s had the advantage but track played well to my eye with no pattern/bias.

Run Of The Day:

Our runners-up were enormous, they were ST JEAN and TAWTEEN but clear ‘’winner’’ for mine was TRUST IN A GUST in Race 9 who drew poorly, sat 4 & 5-wide no cover all the way, sustained a long (wide) run, yet still attacked the line only to be outbobbed.

The horse that outbobbed him was the smart ATLANTE who had the soft run in behind the speed, the split came and he accelerated nicely given he will be better over further than 1200m, he had Dissident form early last prep rememeber! Top return win. LUCKY HUSSLER got onto the back of Trust In A Gust, he did not quicken but did launch late, his 11.62 last 200m was race-fastest and one of the better late splits all day, first run for Weir and nice return him too. SOLSAY was honest on-speed, leader’s went 35.52 1st-600m (solid but not hectic speed). LION OF BELFORT had limited room key stage and did find the line, stable openly said pre-race he would be fitter too. Overall time: 1-10.45 (record is 1-9.29).

To the Dato Tan Chin Nam and THE CLEANER set the strong speed as expected (48.09 1st-800m) and kept going too well, he measured up to G2/WFA standard, albeit with match fitness on-side and ran 1-35.94 (record 1-34.78). Runner-up MOURINHO was forced wider than desired on the home turn yet ran home well for second, has come back well, now has to do it away from MV I guess. FORETELLER was left mile back when THE CLEANER upped the ante to the 600m mark then picked-up and really found the line, he was a sectional star clearly, his splits 600-to-400-to-200-to-home were: 11.32/ 11.59/ 11.97 (34.88 last 600m), excellent! LIDARI went wide/closed well. THE OFFER was another forced wide, he ran home 35.34 last 600m, his last 200m split was 12.23, it was a good return! STAR ROLLING the disappointment. There was 4L first to ninth so…possible query on the form??

Back to Race 8 and loved the win of ST JEAN who was a real sectional star fresh at 1500m, if there was a query here it was the fact he was only going up 100m to 1600m but he was too good, not only was he too good, his closing splits were fabulous when compared to a proven G1 performer like Foreteller in the Dato (same track/trip/day). This guy ran home 35.07 last 600m, the breakdown was: 11.31/ 11.79/ 11.97. For mine, the race ‘’rated’’ as well as the Dato, they went 48.57 1st-800m (3L slower than The Cleaner) and 1-36.2 overall (just .26 slower than The Cleaner/ Dato). PYRROLIC had the good run and took over but winner was too strong late. OUR VOODOO PRINCE was with the winner to the turn and travelling, he raced a bit tight then could not go with said winner with 6kg more but kept closing, he pipped FULGUR (honest effort) for 3rd. ZANBAGH hit the line (3rd-fastest last 200m) and wants further now. ANCIENT KING (4th-fastest home) did enough too.

To Race 6 and TAWTEEN impressed, she led at a good clip 35.11 1st-600m (so would have led older horses in Race 9 by a few lengths midrace) then gave a big kick, her overall time 1-10.7 was sound relative to those older horses. FORTICHE sat off the speed on the rail, stayed inside and was a solid 2nd. PITTSBURGH FLYER raced keen and covered ground, she went well given all that and has upside. PICKIN’ TIME was on the wrong leg according to her rider but did close well, keen to see her on a bigger track, only NOT A HAPPY CAMPER (mile back/ nice work late) had a faster last 200m split. BERIMBAU was back with NOT A HAPPY CAMPER and she too made nice ground, interestingly, BERIMBAU was the only filly to break 24-secs her last 400m but as stated, by the final furlong (200m) a couple were stronger.

The McEwen Stks saw the big boilover with ANGELIC LIGHT having the perfect sit on the back of LANKAN RUPEE, she still had to be good enough to run by him, and she did! She stopped the clock at 57.54 which was just .32 outside the track record. LANKAN RUPEE sat outside the leader ELOPING and they went 34.34 1st-600m (good gallop), he broke clear but was nailed, ELOPING with her 50kg held on OK for 3rd ahead of IT IS WRITTEN who was outsped at 100m but did run home well. CAUTHEN did enough but the fast-run 1000m was too much for him, UNPRETENTIOUS made the ‘Forgive File’, worth noting, his last 200m of 11.53 was the fastest all day, and he was held-up badly on home turn, hmmm.

Nice win from CAKEVA in Race 3 as he did peel out a long way from home, he ran good overall time of 1-31.87 for the 1500m and beat WAR POINT was strong his last 100m, he clearly wants further, he did race better with blinkers on. LOTION kept finding the line, WAR POINT was .17 stronger last 200m. SECOND BASE led until late, he will win races. Watch SOPHIE’S FINALE into something easier, something further, you may have a value winner??

THE FORGIVE FILE:

SPIRITED WILL (tempo against), TEXT ‘N HURLEY (ditto), FLAMIN’ MOGUL (raced poorly/ keen), SOPHIE’S FINALE (back/wide/wobbled turn/ still hit line!), THE MIGHT JROD (wide), WARWARICK (lame), UNPRETENTIOUS (back/ held-up badly), LADY TRICKSTER (too wide), UNDER THE EIFFEL (set a task) and MEMBERS JOY (back and wide/ wants 1400m).

In Sydney it was RANDWICK and another wet track. Rain on the day (again be wary relative times) and track went from HEAVY-8 to HEAVY-9. Those on/near speed won 6 of the 8 races however, almost all avoided the inside lanes.

Run Of The Day:

Honorable mentions go to WINX and TOYDINI but clearly, our ‘’winner’’ this week is LUCIA VALENTINA. She was back between runners and ridden along 500m out, she seemed to stumble in the ground then balanced-up and rocketed home over the top of her rivals despite a modest tempo! Outstanding return.

The tempo of the race (Race 7 – Tramway) was 49.96 1st-800m so as mentioned, they certainly did not go hard, the leader TIGER TEES went to the middle of the track and was gallant, but had no answer winner. TOYDINI was back and wide and did close, he is much better drier too, liked his return, so too RISING ROMANCE who was back (outside winner) then was left standing by her 150m from home but warmed up nicely late! MONTON was next/5th/honest. They ran 1-26.63 for the 1400m.

The Chelmsford Stks was Race 5 and HAWKSPUR returned to winner’s list, he had not won since this race (brilliantly) a year ago and had to really dig as stablemate ROYAL DESCENT clearly headed him on his inside, she was outbobbed right on the wire. Good tactical ride on the winner who will be competitive in big G1’s again it seems. BAGMAN (fitness edge), SACRED FALLS (had good run) and MORIARTY (kept closing) all crossed the line together behind said quinella, all are ticking over nicely. Time here: 1-39.32 for 1600m.

Race 6 was the Concorde Stks and WOULDN’T IT BE NICE came from back, off the strong speed, got the good run through and ran over NUCLEAR CLASS who had absolute run of the race. RAIN AFFAIR sat outside I’M ALL THE TALK up front and they gave each other little peace, both went well. DIDN’TCOSTALOT battled home well fresh but winner sailed by him. TARGET IN SIGHT was always a risk staying at 1000m and yep, badly run off his legs, he warmed up very nicely late when race was over, he wants further!! Time: 59.43 for 1000m.

To Race 3 and the impressive WINX, she was 1st-up at 1200m, looked like the run would improve her, yet her last 100m she came right away from some handy fillies! Her form in first prep was on dry ground too so doubt she is just a ‘wetty’. ALPHA MISS gave her all and pipped leader EARTHQUAKE for second, they didn’t go hard but EARTHQUAKE did not have much peace up there, she did not disappoint for mine. SULTRY FEELING sat up outside her and gave her all, there was only .3L between these three behind the winner.

In Race 4 PANZER DIVISION led all the way, he handles wet well obviously but connections tell us he will be even better when able to sit off them and chase. SHOOTING TO WIN was clear second-best (every chance) and LADY SHARAPOVA was the best closer here from midfield running 3rd, outside of her the race was all on-speed dominated so fancy she went very well. WASHINGTON HEIGHTS the disappointment here up in trip 2nd-up on heavy, off slow pace were key factors, leaning to forgiving him. Time: 1-25.69.

THE FORGIVE FILE:

MEMORIAL (seasonal complaint), JUNOOB (still too wet), CRITERION (went wide early), TARGET IN SIGHT (further please), VILANOVA (too close inside), HOOKED (too wide), GYPSY DIAMOND (midrace pratt/ found line ok), WEARY (pulled-up coughing) and DANESIRI (blew the start).
