SUMMARY OF LAST WEEK:
Racing was at CAULFIELD on Saturday on GOOD-3 track. Rail was out 9m. The inside lanes seemed inferior ground in the home straight, most avoided that part of the track but you could sit handy or swoop and win if the tempo was there.
RUN OF THE DAY: Our runner-up awards go to RYKER and PICKIN’ TIME but winner this week is SHAMAL WIND who did look stiff in Race 8 given she was held-up a touch, just when she needed to be improving (in sprint home race) then flashed at the line, not for the first time in her career she recorded the best closing splits of the day in 21.29/ 10.74 off that slo-o-o-ow 37.22 1st-600m speed.
The winner was GIRL GUIDE who sat 3-deep (however, only one turn Caulfield sprints and remember, fence was ‘’off’’) then showed great courage to nail A TIME FOR JULIA who had sat up 2nd, she too gave her all. Top return here from POLITENESS given said tempo, she hit the line 10.94 last 200m. A few other sectional stars here were MAY’S DREAM (home 10.87) and JESSY BELLE (10.91), they were both 1st-up and times/splits say they both went very well. Overall time was 1-10.25 for the 1200m.
To the G1 Underwood Stks and FORETELLER was able to sit closer to the speed here, 3rd-up, out to 1800m and he got in (lovely ride) from an improved HAPPY TRAILS who weaved through and closed nicely, looks like he is back! CRACKERJACK KING led but stayed well off those inside lanes, he went 51.29 1st-800m so certainly did not ‘’fly’’, he was only collared late! LIDARI sat up 2nd and ave his all. SILENT ACHIEVER kept closing but never seriously threatened, she was 2nd-up jumping to 1800m and there is improvement there. SUPER COOL (3rd-fastest last 200m) was another improver and STIPULATE kept finding the line OK (5th-fastest late split). Overall time: 1-50.25 for 1800m.
The Naturalism Stks was won by GRIS CARO who controlled the race sitting second on the moderate tempo, they went 1-16.47 1st-1200m here, he travelled well, took over then had to fight as ENTIRELY PLATINUM rallied under hard riding and just missed. Leader BONFIRE lasted for 3rd to round out the on-pace trifecta. ALBONETTI came from a clear last for 4th (good effort) and record best closing splits. Liked the run of IBICENCO here, worked forward wide then was posted, he looked gone straightening but came again and was nor far away, fancy he is about ready. Expected better from OUR VOODOO PRINCE, there were many better on/over the line. Overall time: 2-02.67
Race 5 saw the fillies do battle and STAR FASHION (who was only 1st-up) followed SUAVITO and was able to get over her, runner-up didn’t quicken but did respond well when winner joined her. NADEEM LASS rattled home to just get the third prize but winner’s 11.41 was the fastest closing 200m of the race. BLANKET BAY made very nice ground (only winner had better late splits) and plenty made the forgive file here. Time: 1-22.83 off 48.07 1st-800m
Race 4 was for 3YO fillies, also over 1400m, they went slower early (49.15 1st-800m around 6L slower) and slower overall (1-23.69), winner THINKING OF YOU was impressive, yeah she had the nice trail into it but this was only start two and she came away from them very nicely that last 100m. Runner-up PICKIN’ TIME did not have the soft run, she was wide then sustained a wider run into the home straight (winner was on her back), liked the effort! PITTSBURGH FLYER was another who sat deep and she too battled very well, there are many wins in her. FONTEIN RUBY hit the wire ok. BERIMBAU was the pick of the swooper’s though, liked her finale, she recorded an 11.45 last 200m which was 2/100ths quicker than the winner’s. CRAFTY (3rd-fastest late) was a much better run than your ‘’12th’’ says too.
The gelding operation worked for FAST ’N’ ROCKING as he sat off the strong speed (34.08 1st-600m) and secured all the runs, and nutted ANATINA who had the nice trail but was just no match. RYKER did well here up outside the speed, the quinella had softer runs (and last crack at him), the return was good. RIFLEMAN worked home quite well and I could back SMACKDOWN in something easier next time. They ran sharp 1-2.85 for 1100m here.
THE FORGIVE FILE: ZELETTO (sore post-race), LOTION (wide), CAILIN MISS (lame/ internal bleed), MANHATTAN AVENUE (hung off track), NOT A HAPY CAMPER (sat too close!), IMPERIAL LASS (ran out of room), SPIRIT OF HEAVEN (luckless/ may well have won), GOLDEN PENNY (stayed inside rail/ worst ground), LADY CUMQUAT (trapped behind leader when it tired), MEMBERS JOY (3-wide no cover on-speed), LET’S MAKE ADEAL (plenty against!), SPILLWAY (still not out !!), REAL SURREAL (wide), FOREVER LOVED (back/ wide) and CAUTHEN (led Vs pattern/ jock heard respiratory noise too so??).
In Sydney it was RANDWICK on DEAD-4 to GOOD-3. Rail was out 8m and those on-speed, closer to inside lanes had the advantage today.
RUN OF THE DAY: Podium finishers this week are BROOK ROAD and FAMOUS SEAMUS but clear winner for mine was TERRAVISTA who sat wide no cover off the strong speed yet quickly improved, put the race away and ran fast time (1-2.48) doing it… Against the pattern of the day!
The early split here was 28.82 1st-500m. Runner-up I’M ALL THE TALK led and did give a good sight. FAMOUS SEAMUS was one of very few horses to rattle home on the day and he did it with 58kg, terrific return, his 22.02/ 11.46 late splits were clearly race-fastest. SESSIONS, well, he followed the winner, he was OK but didn’t exactly rocket through the line 1st-up. I’VE GOT THE LOOKS went nicely and should have finished closer, keen to see her in easier race soon.
To the G1 and SACRED FALLS was quite dominant, he was caught behind a wall turning then when daylight came back nearer the inside he shot through and won easily. ROYAL DESCENT had nice trail, yet another second for her. LASER HAWK led (good day to do this) and held third in an improved effort. HAWKSPUR took off before the turn and was sound out in those wider lanes. LUCIA VALENTINA hit the line in 11.34 (winner 11.10) against the pattern, don’t sack/ good run. 3YO PANZER DIVISION measured up ok, he sat handy though and was every hope. They ran 1-35.66 here off a 49.58 1st-800m (not a strong speed for this class of horse).
BOSS LANE won the Seventh, sitting handy and kicking, nice ride. Was only 2nd-up so more to come here. Loved the run of BROOK ROAD from off midfield, she really found the line and measured up very well, she ran a 10.04 400-to-200m then 11.22 home, nice!! ATMOSPHERICAL sat just off speed and battled well for 3rd, she was every chance though. MAYSOON led and tried to fight, just no match for them late, she was 4th. Time was 1-9.63 off 35.83 1st-600m.
JUNOOB was well-rated in front in Race 5, he increased the tempo from 600m or so and kept king too well for CRITERION who sat up handy too. BAGMAN keeps racing well, he from from the tail and had an 11.05 last 200m (race-fastest). LA AMISTAD (colder ride/ 3rd-up) was better/sound. Time: 2-06.12
Race 4 was dominated by those up front and FIRST SEAL had the rails trail, then got up inside her more fancied rivals and was too strong, WINX sat 2nd and was solid on dry, EARTHQUAKE led in 49.35 and held third clearly, they had margin on the rest, time was good here given said slow speed, 1-22.83
KURO won Race 3 well, he ran only tick slower than star older horse Terravista too, he stopped the clock at 1-2.37, he hardly had ideal run (even allowing for track pattern) up outside a strong speed (28.73 1st-500m), liked the win! ECHO GAL was solid 2nd with every chance (tracked the winner) and KLAMMER led (inside winner) and held 3rd…. Another on-pace race!
THE FORGIVE FILE: RIVA DE LAGO (needed much more room), SULTRY FEELING (wide), PEGGY JEAN (pattern/ tempo against), TOYDINI (swung wide/ wrong day), IDEAL POSITION (wide no cover), VILLA VERDE (covered ground too) and I’VE GOT THE LOOKS (as mentioned). =================================================================================
