SUMMARY OF LAST WEEK:
Racing was at FLEMINGTON on Saturday on GOOD-3 track, the rail was TRUE, the track played very eel early (even a little towards the inside) then quickly levelled-up before suiting those off that inside rail as the day wore on.

RUN OF THE DAY:
This week’s podium goes the way of PETITS FILOUS, SET SQUARE and TULSA with the latter getting the ‘’gold’’. TULSA was jumping 1100-to-1400m 2nd-up, was back last on the rail then badly blocked until around the 200m mark, he then flew at the wire running an 11.28 last 200m (clear race-fastest) despite not having full momentum!

There have been serious question marks on the 3YO males in Vic this season but this race rated OK relative to quality G1-competitive older horses (Disposition/ Amicus) over the same trip (1400m) later in the day, winner BON AURUM was terrific given the ground he covered, he was backed at odds and ran 1-23.13 (only .4 slower than Disposition and 6/100ths second slower than Amicus), the 1st-800m split was a modest 48.61 (the aforementioned other two 1400m races were run at the same speed, both 48.89, so these 3yo’s were .28 quicker early). LIZARD ISLAND was second, yes he had a softer run than the winner and was just no match but certainly ran well, as did 3rd-placed EL GRECO (kept finding line/ home 11.59) and 4th-horse PATCH ADAMS (back/ held-up/ home hard in 11.54 and should have finished closer!). SOVEREIGN NATION worked home well second start but his run ended late.

Might stick with these other two 1400m races before we get to the G1:

DISPOSITION had the right run and travelled-up sweetly before proving too strong in Race 5, he ran 1-22.73 off that 48.89 1st-800m and was the race rated highest of the three 1400m events, he was one of the best backed runners on the day and there is improvement in him from the fresh run here. AKAVOROUN closed well fresh-up from just off the winner, he took a little ground off him that last 200m too (4/100ths quicker late) and PRESSING was a solid third ridden more positively here, he got in 1-1 and was the best of those on-pace runners. SIR ANDREW (colder ride !!) ran home hard from the tail (race-fastest 11.48 last 200m) and ZEBRINZ measured up well again, he kept closing (home 11.56) in-between horses, keen to back him in easier, at 1600m now.

The Let’s Elope Stks looked a hot field and it was a very competitive finish! There was .8L separating the first six mares on the line, winner AMICUS swamped them all late coming from back/wide with cover and ran 1-23.07 off that 48.89 1st-800m (identical 1st-800m to Disposition’s race/ .34 slower overall) and she beat the underrated PRECIOUS GEM who was with her at the 300m, but just no match, and MAY’S DREAM who was held-up a touch 250m out then closed strongly, MISS ROSE DE LAGO was a solid 4th and 1st-up whilst the other three were 2nd-up, COSMIC ENDEAVOUR was stiff to miss the ‘’podium’’, terrific effort given she was wide no cover and foxed wider on the bend, VEZALAY was every hope, hit the lead, but again swamped late at this level. These six had 1.5L to spare on the rest, of those NIMINYPIMINY measured up well, FENWAY did more than enough and AMARELA was good for midweek race soon.

To the G1 and what do we make of it?? Hard to knock the outcome given the highest-rated horse won it, FAWKNER, however, just like the Memsie a few weeks earlier, they all ran well. The race was run at a crawl for this class of race, a 51.56 1st-800m is ridiculous, there was always only modest tempo on paper but when WEARY went back and ENTIRELY PLATINUM was tardy, well, it was left to HI WORLD to lead them up. Winner had the good run and has this great mix of class and courage! Now 8yo but only had 27 starts, there was 3.8L over the entire field on the line, all fourteen of them were either very good, good or forgivable! RISING ROMANCE was in front of the winner early then, behind him when they straitened, she was out in time for mine but just no match for FAWKNER. Third was ENTIRELY PLATINUM who was slow out as mentioned then rolled forward, every hope this tempo! BOBAN was on the back of the winner and found the line super in-between runners off this tempo. HAPPY TRAILS (every chance) was next from ALPINE EAGLE who was back/wide with cover then made a move but was forced quite wide, worth noting he had race-fastest 400m-to-200m split (10.68) but was 6th-fastest last 200m, did fitness give out or were others tougher/ more seasoned? GUST OF WIND from last on inside was 100/1 off this speed but went over line beautifully, she and RISING ROMANCE had fastest last 200m splits (11.15) just ahead of BOBAN (11.16).

CHURCHILL DANCER is at a new level this prep, he simply dug deepest to win Bobbie Lewis after looking in trouble 300m out, UNDER THE LOUVRE is always a sectional star, he was again flashing home in 11.35 last 200m, clearly race-fastest and clear pick of the closers. GREGERES led in 35.8 1st-600m and was only grabbed late. LUCKY HUSSLER looked a big hope when he improved through on the inside but now, race 6, fancy the better ground was away from the rail, anyways, he ran well fresh-up. AMORINO (sound home fresh/ his best form here is at 1400m) and RICH ENUFF stuck on well when headed, he is still very brave but that brilliance is not there, or, does that top him off fitness-wise?? Overall time a sharp 1-8.86 for 1200m

KINGLIKE won the other 1200m race in 1-9.06 off a stronger (35.12) 1st-600m as new season 3yo, his finale was strong, the win was good, the spruik was big, but in fairness, the jump outs were super! RAPHAEL’S CAT shared the good speed yet kicked away nicely and beat all-bar one (who had sit on him), very good run! READY FOR VICTORY was a funny run, he never travelled yet kept responding to riding, fancy he wants 1400m badly now. PURITAN measured up well, he came from well back and closed nicely, he was race-fastest (11.02) 400-to-200m but the trifecta had 1.1L to spare on him and the rest of the field. REEMAH the filly finished off quite well (3rd-fastest home).

THE FORGIVE FILE:
PARCEL (went solo outside rail/ ambitious!!), REIGNING (back/wide/took off mid race), SNOOPY (held-up until race was over), RAGAZZO DEL CORSA (knuckled/ worked forward), PRINCE OF BROOKLYN (K.O’d), BLACK VANQUISH (vet: mucous), LAST BULLET (nearly fell 200m/ did run on!), YESTERDAY’S SONGS (wide run no real cover), AKZAR (still not out/ had a bit to give!), STERLING CITY (wrong spot/ rail), AWESOME ROCK (wide no cover/ stuck well/ beaten 3.1L and unproven WFA so???), MADAM GANGSTER (dipped start/ lost irons), SET SQUARE (wide/ terrific run), OBSERVATIONAL (bit against) and ABBASSO (forced wide Vs slow speed).

IN SYDNEY it was ROSEHILL on GOOD-3 track, Rail was out 2m, the track played very well with no pattern/ bias, winners sat up on speed and swooped.

RUN OF THE DAY:
Honourable mentions to SWEET FIRE and SULTRY FEELING but the return win of WINX was just outstanding!!

Back last and checked off heels 400m out she hooked out widest and just sprouted wings to get up right on the wire at the 1300m. Wow!! SONS OF JOHN was super from midfield he grabbed NINTH LEGION late but was nailed by a freak performance. STRAWBERRY BOY was as brave as ever, there was only .6L over these four on the line. FAMOUS SEAMUS and TURBULENT JET closed well and VASHKA covered ground and held his ground well. Winner ran a sharp 1-15.77 for the 1300m.

The G1 Golden Rose was run in fast time, 1-21.83, despite an even early tempo (48.14 1st-800m), winner had the good run just off speed and quickly pounced when that gap came, these new season 3yo’s smashed the clock the last 600m splits and winner ran some 8L quicker than older horses over the same trip later in the day. SPEAK FONDLY led on the inside and did kick, but had no answer winner, she held second over SEBRING SUN (good from the back coming wide) and RAGESSE (kept closing Vs tempo).

CATKINS won the Sheraco from just off midfield, what a ripper!! ECHO GAL led in 34.88 1st-600m and had some pressure, she kicked strongly and beat home BOUNDING (every hope) who was coming off a brilliant win at Caulfield, Echo Gal had just given Amicus a race prior, she then won the Let’s Elope Flemington. SLIGHTLY SWEET was back last and didn’t quicken at all then warmed up very nicely late! Top return her. Time: 1-9.14

The other 1200m race was won by GOOD PROJECT and he ran 1-9.36 off a 34.76 1st-600m so the race rated OK relative to those gun mares, winner had the right run and dug in well off nice trial form to beat INZ’N’OUT who settled near the winner, came wider, and was solid, they beat 3rd ok, that third horse was MUSIC MAGNATE who was beaten for speed but ran home hard, fancy the run ended late? SULTRY FEELING  was badly blocked then flew late when finally clear, hmmm…

THE FORGIVE FILE:
SCHERZOSO (didnt quicken/ ran out of room), SLIVOVITZ (back/wide/ took off midway), SWEET FIRE (baulked turn and forced wide/ costly!), SEBRINA (back/wide), PRINCEFAMOUS (pressured/ ran well), HAVANA (wide on hot speed), PEEPING (cardiac arrhythmia), PRESS STATEMENT (luckless key stage!), HEART TESTA (wide), NOSTRADAMUS (wide), NANCY (wide/ stuck well) and TESTASHADOW (never clear/ bad day Angland!!).
