SUMMARY OF LAST WEEK:
Racing was at CAULFIELD on Saturday on DEAD-4 track with the Rail 3m. The was no mad/pattern bias evident although not many swung wide and stormed home on the day.
RUN OF THE DAY:
With honourable mentions going to ARE THERE ANY and SABATINI, the nod this week goes to SPILLWAY who made a top return in the Lawrence Stks to just miss, you could argue strongly he was a touch unlucky too win as he had to ease over the leaders heels when, ideally, they would have wanted full momentum, either way, the run was terrific at an unsuitable trip, off a modest tempo.
Speaking of tempo, the leader ZAMORAR ran a 49.03 1st-800m (not quick for this class of horse) with winner STAR ROLLING up second, the winner was keen early then settled better, he took over and was just able to last, his return was obviously terrific also, he has always promised plenty and may well take the next step this prep. GIG was a sound 4th, she is super genuine. FORETELLER doesn’t win fresh anymore (now 8yo) but always runs well, his 11.75 last 200m was the race-fastest, 3/100ths of a second quicker than that of SPILLWAY. PUISSANCE DE LUNE was caught wide and held his ground well given that, he made the Forgive File. BRAMBLES did not quicken but hit the wire quite well, his last 200m split was 11.86. Overall time: 1-24.37
Regal Roller Stks was Race 5 and HARD STRIDE jumped better today and led them up at a moderate 35.44 1st-600m, both 3yo races were quicker early, he gave a big kick and won well. Race was a bit ”odd” though, runner-up MOMENT OF CHANGE did well given his 62kg but most other key hopes lost ground coming wide on the turn just as the leader/winner was going away. CLUB COMMAND (best late split 11.69) and THIAMANDI (was on the back of the winner!!) the most noteworthy. Lovely return here from DESERT JEUNEY who made nice ground despite the slow tempo and he did not have a ton of room late, his last 400/200m were 22.65/ 11.7 and he looks to have come back very well. Overall time: 1-9.7 for the 1200m.
Race 6 was the Quezette Stks for Fillies and SABATINI was impressive, she really was the only winner all day to come from last/widest and she ran over a fit, in-form (and well-backed) ROYAL SNITZEL who was also very good, she certainly had no soft run on-speed (although 35.31 1st-600m was .4 slower than the boys’ dividion), she absorbed that pressure and kicked strongly but was grabbed late. NOVEL DANCER sat deep on-speed (one turn Caulfield sprints but still, her run was good fresh), she was just no match the last 200m but beat 4th ok, that 4th was LONDON LOLLY who did not quicken but warmed up late, she may need further and/or gear change? KALABEK worked home ok, only winner had a faster last 400m, the difference though was her 23.38 compared to winner’s 22.78. Overall time: 1-4.26
Race 7 was the boy’s turn and the Vain Stks. NORDIC EMPIRE and BOOMWAA shared the speed and gave each other little peace, they went 34.91 1st-600m (.4 faster than girls early) and winner ran 1-3.88 (.38 faster overall) so little between the two divisions ”ratings-wise” for mine. Winner GET THE NOD sat off the solid speed, with no cover, and quickly joined said leaders straightening, and won well !! STINGRAY was just off the winner on the turn but missed the run at a key stage, he did lose some momentum but was quickly clear then closed strongly, he looked a touch unlucky but best horse won. Liked the return of ZULULAND who was building nicely when checked off heels 75m out, he went through the line strong! JABALI was OK, he could have done with more room but yeah, just OK.
GREGERS won the last very softly! She found the lead and set a 36.24 1st-600m, looking at that in the context of the day, Royal Snitzel (filly) in Quezette would have been leading her around 5L with 500m to run, anyway, she was classes above and sprinted clear clocking 11.34 last 200m (fastest all day). Her overall time was 1-4.43 for 1100m. MEMBERS JOY was terrific fresh off that slow speed and home 11.39. FIVE ALL had no hope from the back but her last split of 11.40 was slick and she went through the line very well.
Better touch on ARE THERE ANY who was 1st-up, raced wide and made a move before the turn, she was only beaten late and is in for a good prep. Stablemate SPIRIT OF HEAVEN impressed in Race 1 given it was her first go 1600m, suspect she can go on despite the fact she had 51kg and sat up on a 50.27 1st-800m.
THE FORGIVE FILE:
EMMOOKI’S STAR (covered stack of ground), KINDERGARDEN KID (worked hard early), FELIDEA (start was no help), RED CORNER (too wide), PILLAR OF CREATION (got off rail but found only traffic), DOWN THE HATCH (in traffic straightening/ did hit line!), EMPRESS O’REILLY (found trouble key stage), LEXGETREDDY (still not clear!), JUST FOR STARTERS (blew start but did little) and PUISSANCE DE LUNE (wide no cover).
In Sydney we were at ROSEHILL on a GOOD track with Rail 3m, the predicted rain never came! No leader’s won on the day and there was certainly no issue running on if the tempo was there, most avoided the inside rail in the straight.
RUN OF THE DAY:
Podium finishes go to NOSTRADAMUS and BEST CASE but first prize goes to HOOKED who was off-midfield (in on-pace dominated race) early then crept closer turning before getting to the middle and loved his burst of speed when asked, suspect he peaked late but still ran 4th in a race where 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 5th all were right on the speed.
The winner was the well-backed ENTIRELY PLATINUM (early shoppers found $3.8!!) coming off a brilliant trial, he was wide early, got in, travelled-up sweetly and won well, doubt he will ever be the horse that wins by panels, he seems to do ”’just enough”. MIGHTY LUCKY (sat 2nd) and GREATWOOD (led/ battled hard 1st-up off that good trial) ran the placings. HONORIUS was OK, there was no money for him today (unlike last year when $8-to-$4.8 – when he won it!) but he did enough. Lovely return here from LUCKY CHAPPY (limited room 200m/ hit line nice) and BEST CASE flashed late from a mile back, his 11.04 last 200m was the fastest all day and his 400m-to-200m split was 10.8… Nice! Pass mark for OPINION also (home 11.16), for the record, HOOKED was 10.76/ 11.26 (400-to-200m/ 200m-to-home). Overall time: 1-24.28 for 1400m.
To these smart 3yo’s in Race 5 and winner NOSTRADAMUS impressed, he jumped well, he sat off a strong speed (34.88 1st-600m) and faced the breeze then was strong to the line beating WASHINGTON HEIGHTS who made good ground inside, got the split and hit line hard, 3rd-horse LAW went way back and made up serious ground but winner held him, worth noting LAW’s 33.3 last 600m was race-fastest yet winner NOSTRADAMUS had the quickest last 200m, he ran an 11.4 last 200m. Their overall time was a slick 1-3.63 and a new race record !
Race 4 had plenty of interest and winner TERRITORY was ridden colder (that is his go!) then weaved through and stormed late to grab SKIP TOWN who did not walk up front and was grabbed as he straightening yet fought them off to hold second, very genuine horse. WOULDN’T IT BE NICE ran home hard down the middle and yep, EARNEST ERNEST had the fastest late split, 11.2 but, that’s him! DREAM CHOICE was sound fresh and fancy SCANDIVA will be fitter. Time: 1-10.42
Race 7 was a mostly dominated by those close to the speed, BECKON caused the upset but he had the good run and travelled well into the race, he just had the better of MAROON BAY who did improve the ”Sydney way” and maybe she was not in the A-ground closer to the inside rail? MASTERSTROKE closed well and didn’t have ton of room late. LYRIC kept finding the line. SPY DECODER was the pick of the closers, he made up good ground and broke 34-secs clearly for the last 600m, he had an 11.72 last 200m also (race-fastest). They ran 1-3.9 here off a 29.5 1st-500m split.
In the last the rain stayed away for BLACK REVOLVER and he finally delivered, and he won well from off-midfield as he was asked to sustain a decent run. THE ALFONSO was solid, he just found one better! LUCKY LUCKY LUCKY made a nice return, went through line quite well. HUNTER JACK was sound, he probably wanted the rain to come. GRAND MARSHAL was noteworthy here too, he made up very good ground and broke 12-secs for the last 200m, one of only three in the race to do so.
THE FORGIVE FILE:
MISS VENUS (galloped on), BRING A RING (wide), EVANGELIST (given no peace), DISCLAIMER (needs softer run), MULTILATERAL (tail and went wide), WEINHOLT (tardy then sat deep), CANNY BALLAD (wide), WORLDLY IMPACT (back/wide on-pace race), FORT SUMTER (4-wide no cover), MORAL VICTORY (bad start hurt), IMPULSIVE SPIRIT (too wide) and DOWDSTOWN CHARLIE (too dry/ too wide).
