SUMMARY OF LAST WEEK:
Racing was at CAULFIELD on Saturday for Caulfield Cup Day, track was GOOD, Rail 6m. There was no mad pattern/bias evident, winner’s led and swooped, as expected though, hard on that inside rail later in the day was not the A-ground.
RUN OF THE DAY: A couple to make the podium were AZKADELLIA and ADMIRE RAKTI, however, the major prize goes to LUCKY HUSSLER who ”grew a leg” with the blinkers on and was ultra-impressive winning the Moonga Stks.
He sat back off the strong speed (47.85 1st-800m) and just exploded past his rivals, he ”got lost” a bit late at Flemington when he hit the lead but with the gear on, went arrow straight, and smacked them! His closing splits were very good given said strong tempo too, his overall time was 1-23.49. Runner-up UNDER THE LOUVRE was on his back straightening, he ran home well (11.54 400m-to-200m and 11.84 last 200m – winner was 11.44/ 11.6). Third was GENERALIFE who was back and some 4-wide with no real cover yet still closed strong (home 12-flat) in good effort. MANAWANUI should have finished a bit closer, he raced tight key stage and SMOKIN’ JOEY closed from the back… It was a swooper’s race, these first five all came from midfield or back. 6th FLAMBERGE was best on-pacer. There were plenty of hard luck stories (see Forgive File) in a messy race but still trusting the form!
To the feature, the CAULFIELD CUP and ADMIRE RAKTI’s win was excellent! Back wide with cover, he peeled to the centre and wound up very strongly, this was not a strong-run Caulfield Cup (1-18.77 1st-1200m) which adds merit to he, and LUCIA VALENTINA who was behind the winner 600m out, she came wider and lost touch (almost 3L) as he quickened but she closed in very nicely, her 11.84 late split was race-fastest. Between them was RISING ROMANCE who had a lovely run and railed through, shot clear, but was grabbed late by winner probably in slightly better ground. BRAMBLES was a solid 4th (every chance) and ARALDO worked home nicely, he was back last at 1000m, saved ground, and was sound. LIDARI (every chance) was 6th, JUNOOB (had excuses) 7th, HAWKSPUR (no soft run) 8th, GREEN MOON (OK / Just didn’t finish off) 9th and BIG MEMORY (had same last 200m split as winner – 11.93) was 10th. They ran 2.32.12.
Race 8 saw a dead-heat between BEL SPRINTER (great effort 1st-up with 59kg from back off a moderate 35.54 1st-600m) and MIRACLES OF LIFE (on-speed inside leader, took over, joined on the line). SHAMAL WIND charged/ just missed them in third. BIG MONEY came with SHAMAL WIND and was sound, he never runs poorly. THERMAL CURRENT returned a gelding, sat wide on-speed off that modest speed and stuck on. DRIEFONTEI’s last 100m was tidy, she recorded an 11.54 last 200m, BEL SPRINTER had race-fastest 11.48. Overall time: 1-4.37
The David Jones Cup was run at a slow speed, they went 1-17.84 1st-1200m, to put it into perspective, the 3yo’s in Caulfield Classic over that trip led in 1-14.03 so Merion would have been leading JACQUINOT BAY roughly 22 lengths with 800m to travel… Wow! Winner CONTRIBUTOR had a lovely turn of foot and that won him the race, he left SIGNOFF standing at the 500m, SIGNOFF was very good his last 100m here (home 11.48 last 200m race-fastest) and given was back in trip, off that slow speed, has run very well. Between them NOBLE PROTECTOR ran 2nd from on-speed, winner sailed by her but she came back again and will get further. KINGDOMS was good, forgivable, but can we trust him…?? Time: 2-05.25
To the Caulfield Classic and, yep, they went hard, that 1-14.03 1st-1200m was even 8L quicker than the girls in Ethereal Stks, this made the win of FONTEIN RUBY excellent! Sat up second, headed by one, shook him off, joined by another, then fought her off! Outside of said winner, it was a run-ons race, CRAFTY ran home hard (so fillies 1-2 here) but she cannot get past FONTEIN. First male was FIREHOUSE ROCK who did hit the lead but just wilted abit late, LIGHT UP MANHATTAN was a sound 4th, MAGICOOL an OK 5th, BACHMAN checked off hees 600m and closed well, only CRAFTY had a quicker late split, he wants Flemington and probably, ground. They ran 2-03.82 but early tempo dictated the slick overall time of course.
The the Ethereal Stks and these girls ran 2-04.54 off a 1-15.39 1st1200m. Winner SET SQUARE was very strong on/over the line at just start three and has real upside still. MAASTRICHT a solid 2nd (every hope) and IMPERIAL LASS 3rd, ridden closer with blinkers, she too was sound. HIPSTER GIRL closed ok into 4th but was 3.3L off the trifecta so… They were superior, clearly!
Tristarc Stks was Race 6 and SWEET IDEA was well-rated, she got away with 50.23 1st-800m and slipped away on the turn, great ride! As she pinched that margin her main rivals were coming to the outside (so losing lengths off her). GIRL GUIDE ran on well into clear 2nd, CATKINS had nice trail, solid 3rd and both MAY’S DREAM (back/wide/home 11.38 last 200m – fastest all day) and POLITENESS (home 11.46) were very good. Thought GIRL IN FLIGHT went nicely here too, in limited room, she was 11.44 last 200m. DIAMOND DRILLE was fair, needs wetter before loading up for mine. Time: 1-25.42
THE FORGIVE FILE:
AZKADELLIA (moral beaten), DEVON PRINCESS (poor recovery), TUDOR (blocked/ clear when race was gone), LIBERATION (had issues post-race), WHITE HUNTER (wide), ARMADA (limited luck), LEEBAZ (never got out!), RAIZAN (badly blocked too), RIVER LAD (wide 3rd/ swoopers race), FINAL CRESCENDO (little guide), ADMIRE INAZUMA (no guide at all), MINNIE DOWNS (tempo against), KINGDOMS (lays-in badly/ still hit line!), MIDSUMMER SUN (swung wide Vs tempo), VILANOVA (lame), PINSTRIPE LANE (covered ground), WHITLAM (atrial fibrillation), JUNOOB (wide early/ got in/ wobbled turn/ still hit line), HAWKSPUR (wide/ keen), WHO SHOT THEBARMAN (mucous found), MORIARTY (went wide/ hung in), SEA MOON (sore), ANATINA (mucous/ lacerations = had issues!) and MISS STEELE (tempo against).
In Sydney it was RANDWICK on DEAD-5 Track with Rail 6m. All eight winner’s either led or sat just off the speed.
RUN OF THE DAY: AMOVATIO was the runner-up. Loved the wins of KURO and DEEP FIELD but major nod goes to KERMADEC who missed the kick, sat back then sustained a long, wide run with no trail in… against the pattern, and went down a lip (to the leader), he was a bright future!
… That leader was MUSCOVADO who set a good pace, out 59.89 1st-1000m and just lasted, overall time 1-35.85. CANDELARA just held 3rd (every hope) from ABDUCTION who was stopped at the 200m, then closed, should have run clear 3rd, at least! BRACTEATE ran home well out wide against the pattern into 5th.
The other mile race for older horses was won by EXCESS KNOWLEDGE (nice ride) and he ran 1-35.66 off a slower 1st-1000m, 1-00.62. PAEDEROS (sat handy/ bloused) was 2nd and leader SUPREME WARRIOR 3rd. Yep, on-pace trifecta, the run of AMOVATIO was a ripper, he had to change course 300m out then rushed home against race/day’s pattern!
KURO impressed and ran 1-9.69 so quicker than Nivison winner AVOID LIGHTNING (1-10.29) but the 3yo’s did run .55 (say 3L) quicker 1st-600m in their race. TIME FOR WAR was good on-speed given the big weight and INKLING was sound, but winner was far too good!
AVOID LIGHTNING showed her class! She knuckled down and bloused BROOK ROAD who came with her, 3rd-girl ROSE OF CHOICE was terrific given her wide run, she swept to the lead but was nailed late! SHE’S CLEAN (pleasing return) was 4th. COMMANDING WIT hit the wire late here too… and went nicely.
DEEP FIELD ran time again. He led, travelled, then quickly put 2-3L on his rivals recording 1-3.39 for 1100m off a 29.74 1st-500m. he is a star! THAT’S A GOOD IDEA railed behind him and ran 2nd. SHAMALIA the best of the closers into 3rd.
THE FORGIVE FILE:
LAST WITNESS (wide), LUCKY CHAPPY (wide), REIGNING (held-up/ on-pace race/ hit line!), MOHAVE (wide on-speed), KHALID (lame), I’VE GOT THE LOOKS (little luck again) and FLIGHT ACADEMY (very wide).
