SUMMARY OF LAST WEEK:
Racing was at MOONEE VALLEY on Saturday on GOOD (improving) track. Rail was TRUE. Those away from, the inside rail had the advantage, in fact no winners on the day were hard on that inside rail.
RUN OF THE DAY:
This week’s lower podium spots went to STAY WITH ME and BOOM TIME but hard to go past CHAUTAUQUA for top billing, wow, what a return! Beaten for speed a bit early and spotting them a big start, he went from ‘’in trouble’’ to ‘’race over’’ within about 100m… Outstanding!
The race was won in slick time, 58.23, off a strong 34.1 1st-600m split, runner-up FLAMBERGE was well ridden and good fresh but again had to play second fiddle to a world-class sprinter. 3YO FURNACES sat just off this hot speed and hit the lead, the smart, older sprinters had the last crack at him, he went very well off the back of a top trial in Sydney and can be followed back to his own age. KLISHINA was old late, her 11.95 last 200m was bettered only by winner Chatauqua (11.71) and SWEET EMILY went super for something easier. Pleasing return from TYCOON TARA this grade, this trip also.
The Dato was the other G2 and THE CLEANER returned to the winner’s list (was nearing 12-months between wins) and was strong doing it on a day not many leaders won, he was well-rated (49.06 1st-800m – Onpicalo led the Opie Cup field some 9L quicker earlier in the day) and beat BAGMAN (best closer/ 12.17 last 200m was race-fastest) who is fit and in-form. DIBAYANI again wobbled a bit on the turn, he again was sound. KENJORWOOD gave his all at WFA and narrowly beat home the disappointing CONTRIBUTER who reportedly didn’t like being crowded up and ‘’forcing for runs’’. MOURINHO was the other disappointment here. BANCA MO had sound late splits. Overall time: 1-36.3
The Opie Cup was also over 1600m and they ran slower time (1-36.64) despite that much quicker 1st-800m (47.47). CHANCE TO DANCE had a softer run than THE UNITED STATES who was forced to face the breeze 3-deep a long way out, they had a 2-horse war late, and gaped third who was the fit in-form ABBASSO. BARON ARCHER came from back and wide and covered more ground than the runner-up yet kept closing, he ran well, there was money for him. Thought MUJADALE was terrific here, working early up second on the strong speed, hit lead a long way out and held on super! Stiff not to make ‘’the podium’’. ELECTRIC FUSION hit the line ok (4th-fastest last 400/200 splits).
The Atlantic Jewel looked a great race on paper and the fillies did not disappoint! Winner STAY WITH ME improved quickly from back/wide and raced to the lead beating PASADENA GIRL who followed her (they were within 1/100ths of second last 200m splits, in fast their final 600-to-400-to-200m were all near identical. Both excellent fresh, as was third filly JAMEKA who worked forward early to get in but was posted 3-wide no cover off the solid 35.95 1st-600m speed and held on for 3rd in a race where 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th all swooped. DONT DOUBT MAMMA was back behind the quinella, held up a touch then flashed home in race-fastest 11.60, top run! LAZUMBA warmed up nicely when race was over, she clearly wants ground this prep. They ran 1-11.37 for 1200m which was .81 faster than older sprinters in the following race.
These older sprinters ran 1-12.18 however, the 1st-600m split of 36.8 was significantly slower (4L+). Winner had the dream run behind the slow speed then went inside them as they ran to near the middle of the track straightening up, no knock on the win but things could not have panned out any better given natural leader GALAXY PEGASUS missed the kick. BEACH FRONT sat 2nd and was every hope. GRIANTE sat off them today and was forced wider turn as leaders ran out, she was good given her weight Vs males. SOLSAY led (every hope) and FAST N ROCKING was excellent from back and very wide off this tempo with 60kg! He ran home 11.63 last 200m, that split was bettered only by TANSY (11.58 – day’s fastest!) who also came wide. lost his spot, then hit line hard, good run! Odd race, there was 3L over the first twelve, be careful.
THE FORGIVE FILE:
LIGHTNING BELL (last/ slow pace/ had quickest last 200m split), HOLY COW (luckless and lame), MAGNUS SLIPPER (held-up and not in A-ground), SHADOW OF THE MIST (very wide), STRONG HAND (lame), PRINCE CHERI (lame), PACIFIC HEIGHTS (stayed in worst ground), BADAWIYA (made nice ground in very limited room/ ran well), SAGARONNE (badly blocked), CHIVALRY (raced tight a few times), TANSY (as mentioned), GALAXY PEGASUS (race over at start), FAST CASH (covered ground), ETHIOPIA (atrial fibrillation), KURO (no luck key stage), IM ALL THE TALK (bled), SISTONIC (lame), SHENZHOU STEEDS (worked early/ ended up on rail worst ground/ ran super) and CORREGGIO (took off mid race).
In SYDNEY it was RANDWICK on SOFT track (Soft 7 to Soft 6) with rail 8m. There was a significant bias to those on-speed and nearer the inside.
RUN OF THE DAY:
Honourable mentions to KERMADEC and SPEAK FONDLY but going with SHIRAZ here, back to 1000m, sits 3-wide no cover against the pattern up to 58kg yet runs over quality sprinters anyway! Excellent win.
He ran 57.72 and all honours were his, runner-up CRAFTINESS sat second and wore down leader BALL OF MUSCLE but had no answer winner late, good return though, and like him better on drier. BALL OF MUSCLE was only swamped late, these three had a good gap on the rest of the field.
Race 6 was the Chelmsford and COMPLACENT, 2nd-up off long break led all the way (pattern a help but top effort), this is a horse that has beaten world-competitive Criterion at 3yo remember, he beat KERMADEC who was forced to face the breeze 3-deep against the pattern, great run 2nd-up, he can win a big G1 this Spring no doubt. ROYAL DESCENT was sound (3rd) and HARTNELLL sat 2nd and held on for 4th (not convinced sitting up on-speed is his go). JUNOOB didn’t ping but was very nice over the line here, he was one of three to break 12-secs that last 200m, he ran 11.92, winner was 11.98 and I’M IMPOSING from way back ran race-fastest 11.78. Of the others: PORNICHET was OK but had the back of Kermadec, do prefer him drier. WHO SHOT THEBARMAN went over the line nice at the mile too. Time: 1-37.68
The Tramway was also won by a leader, HOOKED, he was well off the rail though and won well given there looked improvement in him for sure. ECUADOR had the rails trail and went up inside the leader/winner, every hope but solid. RUDY came from off the pace wide with cover and hit line nicely (home 11.6 last 200m). ARABIAN GOLD sat 2nd and given winner led was every hope. KIRRAMOSA ran home hard outside against the pattern (11.56) and LUCIA VALENTINA went between runners from way back and also hit the line hard, her 11.52 was race-fastest last 200m.
SPEAK FONDLY impressed again in race 4, she took sit, took over ‘bolting’ and won running away, the sectionals back that up too, her 11.88 last 200m was significantly faster than anything this race. PERIGNON sat behind said winner and was sound but no match at all. OTTOMAN loomed a bit but yeah, no match either! They ran 1-10.64 for 1200m.
THE FORGIVE FILE:
WINE TALES (back/wide Vs bias), TAP THIS (mixed luck), GOLD AMBITION (no luck), ATMOSPHERICAL (poor recovery), HARTNELL (don’t sack), SWEYNESSE (3-wide no cover), GYPSY DIAMOND (tardy/ ran quite well) and CELTIC PRINCE (wide).
